Sustainable Development, Quality of Life and the Environment in Africa
[ send me this report ]
This is a 4 page paper discussing sustainable development in Africa. The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) reports on the consensus which exists between African governments on the importance of sustainable development for their future. Sustainable development, defined as “a new approach to economic development with emphasis on food security, social development and environmental security” is considered the “key to poverty reduction in the region” (ECA, 2003). There are certain trends which have been occurring in Africa over the past several decades which are considered the most important in regards to sustainable development which have affected the quality of life within the region. Certain areas which have been addressed are: sustainable increases in agricultural productivity; coordinating population growth with the level of food production; monitoring environmental issues; improvements in the use of water; utilizing advances in science and technology in the areas of food security and sustainable development; and addressing population health. While cooperation between African governments, sub-regions, and national and international institutions within the past decade has led to an increased commitment in regards to sustainable development, ongoing civil conflicts within the region also impede the progress of many programs and conservation of resources. The Ambiguities Of Ethnicity: Moral Order Versus Tribalism
[ send me this report ]
13 pages in length. The cause of ethnic conflict is a topic that has been addressed nearly as long as mankind has existed. Although many people have theories about the cause, they do not seem to have the answer as to how to prevent it in the first place. Two conceptual approaches to such conflicts as that which has existed throughout Kenya's history include the rational choice perspective, where one examines the reasons behind the existence of ethnic and religious conflict; and the concept of authoritarianism, where strong leadership persuades people to carry out actions of ethnic and religious conflict because of pressure placed either by peers or government. These two particular types of approach in dealing with ethnic conflict are indeed different; however, one must honestly ask oneself whether civil unrest that is based upon one or the other approach has the right choice for Kikuyu's social existence after all. Bibliography lists 11 sources.

The Application of Lawrence Kohlberg’s Moral Level Theory and Erik Erikson’s Personality Stages Theory in Regards to the Character of Rachel in Barbara Kingsolver’s Novel “The Poisonwood Bible”
[ send me this report ]
This is a 7 page paper discussing Kohlberg and Erikson’s developmental stages as reflected in Rachel from “The Poisonwood Bible”. In Barbara Kingsolver’s 1999 novel “The Poisonwood Bible” the fifteen year old daughter, Rachel, reflects primarily Lawrence Kohlberg’s “conventional” level of moral reasoning and the progression from Erik Erikson’s “identity versus role confusion” (stage 5) to “intimacy versus isolation” (stage 6) levels of personality development. Rachel is considered the most self-absorbed of the characters within the novel and because of this her perspective remains primarily a selfish one and how her family’s environment and values impact her life and development. However, from Rachel, readers can also see a development in her awareness of her surroundings and although she remains still fairly self-absorbed she at least realizes how little impact her and her family and their Christian intentions have on the social and physical environment of the Congo showing a maturity of her moral and personal development. Bibliography lists 8 sources.
