Japanese Government and Economic Status
[ send me this report ]
A 7 page overview of Japanese governmental and societal structure, her relationship with the U.S., and how these factors have influenced her economy. This paper emphasizes that Japan’s emphasis on education industrialization has paid off in one of the highest per-capita incomes, and standards of living, in the Asian world. It notes, however, that even Japan has experienced considerable economic turmoil in recent years. The meltdown of the Asian Tiger in the late 1990s has opened the world’s eyes to the realities of economics and politics as they have never been opened before. Fortunately, the U.S. is still on back stage in regard to aiding Japan onward to a promising economic future. In contrast to the Clinton Administration who apparently sought to undermine Japanese/U.S. relations, the Bush administration has expressed support for Japan’s structural and economic reform. President George W. Bush’s recent tour of Japan reemphasized that fact. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

Japanese Identity: The Kimono Designs of Miyake, Youth Clothing, and Architecture
[ send me this report ]
This is a 9 page paper discussing the modern Japanese identity in relation to fashion and architecture. The modern Japanese identity is highly unique in its combination of the traditional and the “unfettered” modern and often mismatched. Examples of this can be found in the fashions of Issey Miyake and his contemporaries, the fashion selections and manipulations of the Japanese youth and modern Japanese architecture. Regardless of the industry however, a high level of craftsmanship, consistent with Japanese tradition, can be found. Miyake took the traditional and customized kimono and fashioned it for the flexible, international and mass produced market while at the same time defying modern day techniques of conforming the clothing to the contour of the body thus allowing the kimono to still be worn by all women of all body shapes; not usually considered in today’s fashion market. The Japanese youths of today also make their clothing distinct from that of Western countries by taking Western fashions and clothing and combining or manipulating the clothing to develop a modern and mismatched style. The clothing although often appearing vintage or aged is actually extremely high priced and carefully planned. Similarly in modern Japanese architecture, elements of the traditional can still be seen in religious areas such as Kyoto whereas modern urban areas such as Toyko have modern buildings which often combine traditional elements with modern elements which appear to be mismatched but are actually well planned and reflect the freedom of craftsmanship of the architect. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

Examination of this period shows that the Japanese immigrants of that time were some of the most successful, most resilient people to come to American shores. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

Japanese Imperialism and Singapore
[ send me this report ]
This 11 page report discusses the similarities and differences between the Japanese “imperialism” or occupation of Singapore and British imperialism on the island. In Southeast Asia Japanese rule in Singapore was not so very different than what occurred when French imperialism governed “Indochina,” the Dutch in Indonesia, or the British rule in India, Singapore, Hong Kong, or any of its other “protectorates.” In many ways, the nearly four year occupation of Singapore by Japan shattered the many assumptions that had been made over the past century (and more) regarding British authority and its ability appropriately govern its colonies. Annotated bibliography lists 7 sources.

Japan has long held the coveted title of foremost producer within the consumer electronics industry, a reputation that has allowed its manufacturers to maintain the primary position of production and profit margins in comparison to other countries. Today, however, there is a growing trend of product imitation throughout the world that is empowering these other countries - particularly the United States – with the means by which to overtake Japan's once-untouchable status, causing Japanese companies to re-evaluate the best way to regain this lost advantage.
