William Randolph Hearst And Joseph Pulitzer: Yellow Journalism And The Spanish/American War
[ send me this report ]
21 pages in length. It was, perhaps, the most devastating event to occur with regard to journalistic integrity, but it was bound to happen in light of growing competition within the industry. William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer were two power hungry publishers who each had his own successful newspaper. Both Hearst's New York Journal and Pulitzer's New York World provided readers with up-to-date information, along with plenty of stimulating social appeal, yet the two literary moguls were constantly competing with each other for a bigger take of the readership pie. So intense was this rivalry that the ongoing battle soon turned into an ugly, mudslinging, back stabbing display of greed and power. The writer discusses yellow journalism and the Spanish/American War as they relate to Hearst and Pulitzer. Bibliography lists 50 sources.

Ethical Theory in Sports Journalism
[ send me this report ]
A 22 page paper discussing the philosophies underlying the solid and accepted principles of journalism, particularly as they relate to any sort of conflict of interest arising from simultaneous corporate ownership of reporting organizations and performing organizations. The second and smaller section of the paper provides concrete example of the problems of subjectivity in reporting. It provides several examples of broadcast 'cheerleading' styles dating from as far back as the 1960s and examines the implications of the 1999 purchase by the corporate parent of the Dallas Morning News of a minor stake in Dallas' struggling rofessional basketball team, the Mavericks. The Press & The President
[ send me this report ]
A 5 page paper discussing the involvement of the press in the lives of the presidents of the 1930's in comparison to their involvement in the life of the current president, President Clinton. The press has always been very actively interested in the lives of the presidents of the United States, but while it seems as though they may be more vicious today than they were in the 1930's, in some ways they are just as cold and cruel in their attacks. The difference may be that we are much more aware of many aspects today than the citizens of the United States years ago. In that respect it may only the subject matter has changed, with the perseverance of the press still the same. Bibliography lists many sources.

This 10 page report discusses the modern media and the extent to which it is responsible for making the news or breaking the news. Increasingly, the line between reporting the news and participating in the news has become blurred for the modern media. If the media does not show up to cover a “newsworthy” event, was it really “newsworthy?” In an age of instant communication, in which there is little time for reflection, accuracy, balance or integrity -- the media regularly creates the impression that sleaze, is everywhere and that nothing is sacred.
