Budgetary Challenges and the European Union of the Future
[ send me this report ]
This 16 page report discusses a scenario in which the current members of the EU agree that Estonia, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovenia should be allowed to join the community by 2010. However, in this fictional scenario, their accession was only agreed after discussions over the economics of the “community” were addressed. The European nations which were the most decidedly “mainstream” in terms of their European identity -- Germany, France, Italy, et al -- found themselves facing questions regarding how legitimately European one should consider nations such as Estonia, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovenia. Benefits, challenges, and potential problems are addressed. Bibliography lists 13 sources.

Many individual businesses were well equipped with the technological standards of business today, but they were concentrated in only a few major industries. All other segments of the economy did not fully share that good fortune—not only was infrastructure lacking in many areas but where it did exist there often were no qualified technical personnel to manage them. Catherine the Great of Russia
[ send me this report ]
(6pp) It has been argued that Catherine was an educated ruler, not necessarily an enlightened one. The argument being that the Enlightenment was a time when people were discussing abstract ideas, and attempting to reach consensus in the process. However in Europe this was mainly discussion between intellectuals, and since at the time of Catherine's reign only two percent of her subjects were literate, it would lead to a narrow ray of enlightenment on the formal sense. With the data out of the way, I believe that Catherine made every effort, and did make, or cause change, considering the social environment that was her arena. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Decline Of Imperial Russia
[ send me this report ]
A 5 page paper on the decline of Imperial Russia. The discussion involves the argument of whether the decline was doomed or merely unlucky, based on pages 528-611 of the book Major Problems in the History of Imperial Russia by James Cracraft. The side that is taken is that of stating Imperial Russia was destined to fail in light of the fact that they refused to make necessary adjustments to the changes that were rapidly occurring throughout their continent, as well as the rest of the world. They ignorantly believed that they could uphold their tradition and follow their individual form of modernization without integrating themselves with anyone else. No additional sources cited.
