Edward Said/Orientalism
[ send me this report ]
A 3 page essay that first of all discusses the major points of Said's text Orientalism, which argue that the Western interpretation of other cultures provided a necessary vocabulary for demonizing non-Europeans that served to rationalize European and American imperialism. In other words, Said proposes that the ways in which the West conceived the Orient, and in many ways still does, tells much more about the Western mindset than it does about the people who are the focus of Orientalism. The writer then discusses the rebuttal of Said's thesis offered by Keith Windschuttle. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

Empirical Research Proposal Regarding the Oppression of Women in Islamic States
[ send me this report ]
This 12 page report discusses whether or not the oppression of women in Islamic states is based in the religious theology of Islam or in the cultural contexts of individual nations. Many believe that the Quran (Koran) teachings and male dominance have caused this situation when the actual problem has been more directly related to the interpretation of holy scripture by men. It is the fundamentalist extremists who should take the blame for distorting the teachings of Islam. This paper is written in ways that lend themselves to the actual development of a larger research project. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

This is an expanded version of the 52-page paper of the same name (KShrTechStu.rtf), and includes a deeper analysis of the statistical analysis section. It also includes a new recommendation that the company make greater efforts to train current (Saudi) employees in any new technology it plans to add in the future, so that it can select support personnel for that technology from current employees. Establishment Of The State Of Israel: Impact Upon Bedouin Of The Negev
[ send me this report ]
6 pages in length. Similar to the plight of America's indigenous Indian population when the Puritan colonists settled upon their territory, the Arab Bedouin in the Negev – a nomadic people who comprise twelve percent of Palestinian's minority population (Anonymous, 2004) – were forced into a miserable existence replete with loss of rights to land ownership and grazing, agricultural desecration, lack of water access, substandard education and general misery cast upon them ever since the 1948 War when eighty percent of the natives either fled from or were thrown off their property when the State of Israel came into existence. Those who remained were relegated to second-rate military plots without opportunity to return to and cultivate their own land. That was not the worst of it, however, when one considers the inhumane treatment unrecognized villagers have historically endured at the hands of a merciless Israeli government. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

Ethiopian Jews
[ send me this report ]
6 pages in length. Lost in a sea of political, social and religious disregard, Ethiopian Jews – called Falashas meaning "the alien ones" – were no more considered a welcome part of their homeland than any other infiltrator would be. That they were half a million strong did nothing to maintain their cultural strength against other indigenous peoples of Gondar. With religion at the crux of this separation, it comes with great relief that this virtually desolated ethnic population was both discovered and rescued from its collapse into complete destruction. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Expanding to Kuwait
[ send me this report ]
A 4 page memo to the president of a company contemplating expanding to Kuwait. The memo reports on the economy of the country, social factors and implications for the company. Kuwait's market is limited by virtue of its size and relatively small population. What does exist is quite active economically and the people are allowed to pursue interests of their own choosing. Kuwait is an attractive moderate country, largely as open to the presence of other religions as it is to business. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Fortunes in the Istanbul Stock Market
[ send me this report ]
A 9 page paper discussing the history and growth of Turkey's stock market over the past decade and how it has affected relations with international investors. Turkey's economy is rather typical of successfully developing markets in that it enjoys an overall upward trend but suffers from occasional setbacks as all markets do. What sets Turkey's Istanbul Stock Exchange (ISE) apart from the markets of other developing nations is that its overall upward trend is so very impressive. In the first six months of 2000, the ISE was the best-performing of all the world's markets in developing nations, posting a six-month total return of 171.8%. The ISE has been dominated by local retail investors for much of its history, but international institutional investors accounted for 51% of the ISE's capitalization by 1999. Bibliography lists 15 sources.

Foundations of Terrorism
[ send me this report ]
A 6 page paper assessing the influence that the history of Algeria’s independence and Palestine’s struggle against Israel has had on the development of terrorism as it exists in today’s world. In many respects, it seems as though terrorism has become little more than a bad habit for many of those promoting and practicing it – a lethal habit, but a habit nonetheless. One author explains that one of the reasons for the persistence of terrorism is that it was a component of successful efforts of Algeria’s nationalists in gaining Algeria’s independence. Bibliography lists 3 sources.
