2 books on Latin America
[ send me this report ]
A 10 page research paper that compares and contrasts 2 texts on Latin American economics. The two texts profiled are Latin America at the Crossroads by H.J. Wiarda (1987) and Fast Forward, Latin America on the Edge of the 21st Century (1997). A through overview of each text is offered, and then the texts are contrasted for quality and content, which are--in both cases -- very good. However, the final assessment in regards to these texts is that their greatest drawback, in regards to applicability by the reader, is that neither book addresses current Latin American realities as one is 17 years out-of-date and the other is 7. A Comparative Perspective on Mexicans and Cubans in the US
[ send me this report ]
An 8 page paper discussing conditions in the US during the mid-1800s and then jumping
100 years forward to examine immigration patterns since 1959. Demographers predicted
long ago that Hispanics collectively would comprise the largest minority within the US by
the turn of the century, and such has proven to be true. What they failed to predict is the
dichotomy with which these two groups are viewed. The Anglos immigrated to areas
already occupied by both Native Americans and Mexicans, and treated each equally poorly.
There was little notice of immigrants from Cuba settling in the Tampa area in the 19th
century, and they were able to more closely preserve their traditional culture. Bibliography
lists 11 sources.

An Anthropological View of Oscar Lewis’ “The Children of Sanchez: Autobiography of a Mexican Family”
[ send me this report ]
A 5 page overview of the lives and circumstances of five members of a poor Mexican family in Mexico City in the 1960s. Plagued by poverty, the challenges of living in the corrupt and unpredictable environment of one of the world’s largest cities, and just the incredibly fragile relations which occur within a typical family, the Sanchez family walks on tedious grounds in most aspects of their daily lives. This paper examines the attitudes of each of the family members from an anthropological perspective and attempts to answer the question as to whether it is fate that shapes their lives or their own actions. The author also points out that Lewis’ anthropological method is now considered outdated and possibly even deleterious by contemporary anthropologists. No additional sources are listed.
