McNergney Vinyard, of being the first and largest city in the United
States with a Catholic origin. In her book, For Faith and Fortune: The
Education of Catholic Immigrants in Detroit, 1805-1925, she chronicles
the development of Catholic education from the time Michigan was a
territory until the referendum on the proposed constitutional amendment
in 1924, requiring all Michigan children to attend public schools. This
